Understanding Reformer Maintenance: What It Involves and How Often

Reformers take a beating. Every workout puts substantial load through the same springs, bearings, and straps — and a studio running six or eight classes a day is putting years of wear on a machine in a matter of months. Here's the schedule I recommend, and why.

What regular maintenance actually involves

Pilates equipment needs regular maintenance to perform optimally and prolong longevity. The type of maintenance required is specific to the type and brand of machine. For most reformers, the critical steps include the cleaning of tracks, wheels, pulleys, and springs with subsequent lubrication. Proper lubrication allows a reformer to function smoothly and quietly by reducing the friction on moving parts. This is especially relevant for the wheels and springs. However, there are other areas where lubrication is crucial, such as sliding gear selectors.

Maintaining equipment regularly is critical to keep it functioning as new for its entire lifecycle. Lubrication prevents wear that degrades parts over time, leading to bumps, squeaks, and roughness. For machines where this has occurred, beginning regular lubrication provides noticeable improvements, but replacing worn out parts is typically required to completely resolve issues.

Another important maintenance item is the realignment of the guide wheels that hold a reformer carriage in position. Overtime, side to side forces exerted on a reformer cause these wheels to shift. This can result in side-to-side play in the carriage along with noise as the wheels unevenly contact the track.

How often it should happen

For machines in good condition, a monthly service interval is appropriate for cleaning, lubrication, and adjustment. Many manufacturers such as Balanced Body recommend even more frequent cleaning and inspection, however; most studios find monthly to be sufficient for their specific level of use.

A monthly service interval also serves as an appropriate frequency for conducting safety checks on equipment. This means verifying that all eyehooks, u-hooks, and other components are properly tightened and secured to prevent injury.
