Dry Lubricant: PTFE vs. Silicone
For springs, pulleys, tracks, and most components on Pilates reformers, a dry lubricant is essential for preventing the accumulation of dust and dirt. There are two main types of dry lubricant, both sprayed from an aerosol can: PTFE and silicone. Both are highly effective lubricants, but there are some important differences. PTFE (commonly known by the brand name Teflon) is a powdered version of the same material used as a coating on non-stick pans. It is a completely dry lubricant — just powder sprayed with air. A notable concern with PTFE lubricant is that it is a forever chemical. Ongoing research links PTFE to negative health effects.
In contrast, dry silicone lubricant is not associated with negative health effects. It has the same capacity to lubricate as PTFE but is slightly more intensive to apply. The silicone is suspended in a solution of petroleum distillates to facilitate spraying. Once sprayed, the silicone bonds to the surface of the component, and the petroleum distillate evaporates, leaving a dry slick surface. Because the evaporation takes time, it is recommended to wipe off excess and then allow the surface a minute to dry.

Where a Liquid Oil Works Better
Dry lubricant will cover most parts and surfaces on reformers, chairs, and other machines, but there are a few exceptions. Bolts, such as those that connect foot bars, benefit from a liquid lightweight oil, such as 3 in 1 oil. This is because the oil can seep into tight gaps and reach the bolts at the center. The same is true for the upright posts that often hold up pulleys.
Note of caution: Never use a wet lubricant on rubber surfaces or surfaces that come into contact with rubber. The oils will seep into and break down the rubber, causing it to disintegrate.
